Jellyfin, first impressions (vs Plex)

Hi all,
here follow my (very) first impressions about JF vs PLEX:

  1. it cannot manage movies at all: they don’t start either. Black screen. Plex can manage SD movies (with some difficulties);
  2. some indexes in music are missing: artist list and album artist. It seems like it is quite a well known problem out of the box so I suppose there is also a solution;
  3. Artists career and description of each album are not available out of the box. Plex has both OOTB;
  4. Photos: it seems like it can manage them quite better than Plex that remains completely unreliable for this purpose;
  5. it looks like there is a great possibility of customizing the enviroment through lots of options and plugins.

Off topic: I’ll evaluate Nextcloud to manage photos (after a simple test it looks much better than those media servers) and movies too. As far as the music library is concerned for the moment Plex is still the best in my opinion.
@boris thanks for the implementation. I’m sure that Jellyfin is potentially much better than it looks like OOTB. Currently I don’t have time to spend on it.

Do you think these are Jellyfin limitations or our packaging is wrong?

If these are Jellyfin problems you could probably create issues at Issues · jellyfin/jellyfin · GitHub
So by the time you have time to check again they will fix them all :slight_smile:

Are you saying you cannot even play movies?

right, I can’t. The player shows a playing status but nothing is rendered, video nor audio.

Did you add a library folder and copy your video into /data/jellyfin ?
What error are you getting in the browser?

I am able to play some movies but others do not by some reason, checking with jellyfin devs: [Issue]: · Issue #7633 · jellyfin/jellyfin · GitHub

do you see the same as in this issue?

I have just pushed new version as video encoding was broken on many file formats, version 90 fixes that.
Please upgrade and try.

it works now! Thx a lot. As soon as I have some time to spend on it, I’ll try to stress it a bit just to find out the performances in different situations: local network, remote, sd and hd movies, etc.
Another aspect I need to face are the missing indexes in music libraries but for them it looks like there are several things to try.
Ciao, thanks
