Relay traffic on home wifi?

I was wondering, when we are connected to our own home Wi-Fi, transferring things for example from a computer or smartphone over Wi-Fi to our Syncloud server (Immich for example), it goes over the internet and then to the server or somehow, all programs or operating system recognizes that it is internal Wi-Fi and does everything peer to peer.

Immich for example asks if we have another direction to use

Currently with relay enabled DNS incoming traffic goes through the relay always.

There are few options, one of them is to add a DNS override at home router or pi-hole (if you use it) and point your device DNS to local IP.

Another option I use is to enable ipv6 (if you provider has it) it is always direct if you are in ipv6 enabled network home or outside.

I tested it out and Syncloud (settings, access) says it doesn’t work when I try to activate it (the IPV6) though my network and android phone (on Wi-Fi) says it is working.

Then I tried to change from IPV4 from relay to another option and … now my Syncloud can’t be accessed, both at home or over external access! Even at the previous network IP…

What can I do?

Do I need to access it from the command line / HDMI?

Yes ipv6 now requires internet service provider support as we are checking availability from outside on save, let me get back to you on that.

Ok I will make ipv6 validation error informational, so users know that outside connection is not available but still save for local network.
I will let you know when it goes out.

Another question:

What if, when I want to communicate in the home network, I turn off the “Relay”?

  • Can on the IPV4 just a button of “Relay for Outside connections” (on / off) be added? (Instead of having to change to “public” or other?)
  • “Automatically turn on Relay at 6:00 AM and turn off at 8:00 PM, to use no Relay at home”
  • Add a “do you want a Relay toggle shortcut on the main screen?” (Where the apps appear)

That way, those that need relay, can at home just in the main screen turn off Relay, do the sync and afterwards turn on again. Sometimes I have just a couple of GB to sync and at home I need to Relay…

Ipv6 now saves with the warning, can you check if that option works for you before moving to other options?

What can I do? Or do I need to install everything again?

Check settings - updates and apply if any.
Then just enable ipv6 in access and save.

I don’t get any Ethernet access…

What ipv4 selection did you make?
I think in your case it should be ipv4 relay and ipv6 on, is this what you saved?

Then I tried to change from IPV4 from relay to another option

Sorry missed completely the part, looks like you tried to disable public IP (which would break DNS) so you need to open by local IP now.
Is you device actually running now?
What device do you have?
Hdmi should help if have on wand send me the screen.
Also router usually shows all IPs of local devices.

Even with the local IP it didn’t give me access.

So I took a bigger microSD and installed the latest image from the website 26.7.1 and I could initiate (language selection) BUT now it doesn’t give me access again: now the app/browser denies me access because of the SSL certificate!

It says it’s old. Is it from the old image from your website?

Forget it, after a couple of hours it works. What happened .. No idea. But it works now.

EDIT: imagine I want Immich or Syncthing on my phone to use ipv6 to communicate with Syncloud (Raspberry Pi 500) when at home network, what do I have to change (apart from enabling ipv6 on Syncloud and knowing the Syncloud’s ipv6 on my router) so that the apps don’t use Relay and use ipv6 instead?

PS: I still find it simpler to have a toggle at the main Syncloud homepage to toggle from "At home: Turn off Relay and use internal IP" (?) It saves Relay data and uses internal home network only

Glad you got it working!

The idea is this: you have ipv4 relay enabled and ipv6 enabled and save. That gives domain name (DNS) two entries ipv4 and ipv6. You still use DNS and in theory devices should prefer ipv6 which means connect directly but when your phone is outside home network it cannot connect directly by ipv6 (address is not reachable) your phone will fallback to ipv4 (which is reachable).

Let me know when you saved this I can check IP addresses.

Syncloud homepage to toggle from “At home: Turn off Relay and use internal IP”

You can do this if you want open settings - access and turn ipv4 to local, but public services would stop working for example your mastadon (social network) or incoming email.

Also I think you have a proper ipv6 from your provider but you router may need a firewall allow incoming traffic to your device ipv6 at least TCP 443, can you check that?

That is the warning access page gives you on ipv6 save, if you can fix that you do not need relay unless your mobile network (home country or foreign) you use does not support it.

I enabled the port (my router says add over IPV4 or over Mac, I opened over Mac address) and no access on my home network over ipv6 (even tried adding [ ] to the ipv6 address as online someone suggested).

But I’m fine turning off Relay at home. If you could add a button :star_struck:

Sorry can we check ipv6 support a little bit more as it is the proper way before adding more workaround buttons please?

Can you check that your provider supports ipv6 but opening the at home WiFi network: http://test-ipv6.com/

If course. I tested it and it works
